Do you ever feel like your employees are just going through the motions? Maybe they’re not as motivated as they used to be, or perhaps they’re not being challenged enough. If this is the case, it’s time to take action! This video will discuss seven ways to keep your employees motivated and challenged. We’ll create this together right after this!

Employee engagement is critical to the success of any local business. This video will uncover seven ways to keep your employees motivated and challenged.

I’m Doug Barra, and for the last 16 years, I’ve seen hundreds of owners of local businesses working hard to make sure their teams are motivated and challenged. I am always amazed by how courageous you are even to be a local business owner.

Putting everything on the line day in and day out, week after week, year after year. You have to make sure that your employees are motivated and challenged because if they’re not, then your business will not be successful.

So let’s get started with our seven ways to keep your employees motivated and challenged.

The first way is by ensuring that you have a clear purpose and vision for your business. Your employees need to know why they come to work every day. They need to understand what the company’s goals are and how their roles contribute to those goals. If you don’t have a clear purpose and vision for your business, take some time to develop one. It will make a big difference in employee engagement. Everyone wants to work. Everybody wants to make a difference and work for an organization aligned with that.

The second way to keep your employees motivated and challenged is by ensuring that they have the opportunity to grow and develop. This doesn’t mean you need to promote everyone into a management role, but it does mean providing opportunities for employee growth. This could include offering training and development programs, cross-training employees in different areas, and giving them more responsibility within their current roles. As a result, employees will feel they’re growing and developing and that will have them more engaged and motivated.

The third way to keep your employees motivated and challenged is by communicating with them regularly. Employees need to know what’s going on in the company, both the good and the bad. They need to know about changes that will affect them and feel like they’re a part of the decision-making process. Regular communication doesn’t need to be formal, but it does need to happen. For example, have regular team meetings, send out company-wide emails, or even have one on one conversations with employees regularly.

The fourth way to motivate and challenge your employees is by giving them autonomy and trust. This means letting them make decisions within their roles and trusting that they’ll make the right decisions. It can be scary to let go of control, but it’s important to remember that your employees are adults capable of making good decisions. If you micromanage everything, you’ll only end up frustrated, and your employees will feel like they’re not trusted or valued. Instead, give them the autonomy to make decisions and trust that they’ll make the right ones.

The fifth way to keep your employees motivated and challenged is by providing positive and negative feedback. Feedback is a crucial part of employee development, and it’s often overlooked. Employees need to know what they’re doing well and where to improve. Giving feedback can be difficult, but it’s essential to do it in a constructive and helpful way. Avoid giving criticism that is vague or overly negative. Instead, be specific about what the employee did well or where they need to improve and offer suggestions on how they can make those improvements. Always remember that it’s even more important to give positive feedback. People continue to do things they get praised for.

The sixth way to keep your employees motivated and challenged is by ensuring that their work is meaningful. This doesn’t mean that every employee needs to save the world, but it does mean that their work needs to be something they care about. Employees who feel like their work is meaningful are more engaged and motivated. So take some time to consider what your employees are passionate about and how you can align their roles with those passions.

The seventh and final way to keep your employees motivated and challenged is by being a role model yourself. As the leader of your company, you need to set an example for employee engagement and motivation, motivation. If you’re not engaged and motivated, how can you expect your employees to be?

Let’s recap the seven ways to keep your employees motivated and challenged:

  • Align their roles with their positions

  • Allow them to grow and develop

  • Communicate with them regularly

  • Give them autonomy and trust

  • Provide feedback, both positive and negative,

  • Ensure that their work is meaningful, and

  • Be a role model yourself

If you implement those seven strategies, you’ll create a workplace where your employees are engaged, challenged, and motivated. And when your employees are happy and productive, your business will be too.

Remember that what works for one business might not work for another, so be sure to tailor these strategies to fit your specific needs. Please comment on how you will implement these strategies in your business. I’m always happy to chat!
